About Me

Mrs. Barnhill: I received my Bachelor of Music in 2007 from Lawrence University, where I majored in Music Education. I currently live in Appleton with my husband Michael, our dog Lily and our three cats: Winston, George and Christopher. We are one big, happy family! When not at school or work, I enjoy spending time with my family, cooking, roller skating and (of course) making music. I have been involved in many different musical activities throughout the years, including playing bassoon and contrabassoon for the Lawrence Symphony Orchestra and the Sheboygan Symphony Orchestra and playing in the pit orchestras for performances of Titanic, Phantom, The Wiz and Beauty and the Beast.

My Philosophy of Music Education

As a music educator, I feel a great sense of responsibility in providing my students with the tools necessary to share in the immense joy that can come through the musical experience. My job is to create an environment that welcomes differences in opinion and ability and fosters creativity and learning. I believe that music offers more to its students than simply learning to read notes, to sing or to play an instrument. An effective music classroom values teamwork and dedication along with individual achievement and encourages students to learn valuable lessons in time management and personal responsibility. It is, of course, extremely important for students of instrumental music to master the technical aspects of playing their chosen instruments and to present performances that are of the highest quality possible. Equally important, however, is the ability of the music educator to guide their students to look beyond the notes and rhythms and to achieve a deeper understanding of the music that is being experienced. Understanding the cultural and historical background, the life and techniques of the composer, the emotional effects of the piece and more will provide the students with a much deeper connection to the music. These deeper opportunities for learning can be taken directly from the music and treated as natural a part of the curriculum as learning scales and fingerings. This broader approach also presents many more opportunities for students, all with individual tastes and reasons for pursuing music, to share in a meaningful experience. Educators in every field of study must remember at all times that no two students are identical, and for this reason do not always learn in the same manner or at the same speed. Therefore, it is important that they present their lessons in a manner appropriate for a differentiated group of learners. By selecting music at appropriate and varying levels of difficulty, varying the style by which they present material to the class and by offering various ways in which students can demonstrate their understanding, music educators can help to ensure that the needs of every individual are being met. I believe that it is incredibly important for every student to be challenged regularly while also having many opportunities in which they will experience success. I believe that all students have the right to experience this aspect of education and that it is the job of music educators to make it possible and positive.
